Mr. Howell

Howell, Tom Harvey, of Kirkwood, Missouri, was born Dec. 14, 1952, in St. Louis, to Donald Lucas Howell Sr. and Helen (nee McGovern) Howell, and entered into rest Sunday, April 21, 2024, in St. Louis, at the age of 71 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nancy Lou Howell Hicks.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Athalia (nee Platt) Howell; children, Thomas Ryan (Andrea) Howell, Jeffrey McFarland Howell and Joseph Platt (Kathleen) Howell; their chocolate lab, Nellie; and brother Donald Lucas (Sharon) Howell Jr.; along with many other loved family and loved friends.

As a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, he majored in photography and printmaking, but he loved all art. Tom spent many years as a devoted father, coaching each of his sons in soccer, baseball and basketball. His commitment extended beyond the sports field, as he invested his time in the Scouts, mentoring the next generation. Tom was an avid outdoorsman partaking in hiking, RVing, fly fishing and gardening. In his retirement, he became a steward of the national parks volunteering many years in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as working with the Forest Service in Oregon. Tom’s legacy is not just in the memories he leaves behind but in the lives he touched and the values he instilled, forever cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Chapel Hill Mortuary, 10301 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, Missouri 63122. Inurnment will follow on site at Oak Hill Cemetery.
